If you have a book you would like to confirm is in the public domain in
the US, and therefore suitable for Project Gutenberg, please do the
following:

1. Check whether we have the eBook already. Look in
=09http://ibiblio.org/gutenberg/GUTINDEX.ALL
which is updated weekly. (The searchable catalog at
http://www.gutenberg.net lags behind by several months)

2. Check the "in progress" list to see whether someone is already
working on the eBook. Sometimes, books are listed as in progress for
years - if so, email David Price (his address is on the list) to ask
for contact information for the person working on the book. The "in
progress" list:

Free Computers!!

Project Gutenberg has received a generous donation of over 20 Pentium
Pro 100 computers. If you have a need for a computer to do Project
Gutenberg work or can make good use of computers please
let William Fishburne (william.fishburne@verizon.net) know!

The computers are physically in Northern Virginia and if you are not,
it would be necessary for you to arrange for the shipping cost.
Please send in your thoughts and ideas on how PG can make best use
of this dated windfall! =20

These are GREAT for any wordprocessing, etc. . .it's just about exactly
what I am using here,for all my Project Gutenberg work. However, these
are NOT good for the "bloatware" operating systems and programs if you
are going to reload and reboot a lot. . .takes some real time for this.
However, I scanned the first books I ever OCRed on something much slower.=

Thanks!!!

More in the series 'What is best for reading e-texts?'

From: David Spalding

I highly recommend Mobipocket's Reader (http://www.mobipocket.com/) for
PalmOS, PocketPC, and several other handheld platforms.

It does a marvelous job for reading .TXT, .HTML, and .PRC ebooks. The
desktop program comes with a "quick publisher" to create eBooks, and
Mobipocket offers a free publisher program (imports HTML, Word docs, and
open ebook exchange files). The basic Reader is free, and $19.95
registration unlocks fancy features like notes, drawings, orientation spi=
n,
highlighting; I have not yet had to register it, though, to fully enjoy
reading etexts and Internet newsletters on it daily. In fact, my use of
Mobipocket has renewed my interest in downloading PG texts!

Yours,
David Spalding

Book Review
From: Juliet Sutherland

Many people focus on PG as a respository of great literature. I prefer to=
=20
focus on the "not-so-great" literature. A lovely little book, of a type t=
hat=20
many people would not expect to find in PG, is "The Bird-Woman of the Lew=
is=20
and Clark Expedition" by Katherine Chandler, 1903c. This is a book intend=
ed=20
for a child (or adult) learning to read English. From the Preface, "The=20
vocabulary consists of fewer than 700 words. Over half of these are found=
 in=20
popular primers. Therefore, the child should have no difficulty in readin=
g=20
this historical story after completing a first reader." It was published =
on=20
the 100th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and tells the sto=
ry=20
of Sacajawea, the Indian who guided Lewis and Clark for much of their=20
expedition. I expected that the usual, politically incorrect (by modern=20
standards) views and opinions of the era would permeate the book. But the=
=20
story presents a surprisingly factual and unbiased view of events, that I=
=20
found very interesting in light of all the attention surrounding the 200t=
h=20
anniversary of the expedition. I'd like to think that another generation =
of=20
people learning to read will be able to benefit from this book.

Have you read the work of Jean de La Fontaine or Harry Lorrequer (Charles=
=20
James Lever)? I hadn't until recently. However, in a wonderful example of=
=20
bringing Project Gutenberg literature to life, David Widger, a long-time =
PG=20
volunteer, has established "Dr. Widger's Library", a literary web site "p=
ar=20
excellence". David has produced for Project Gutenberg eBooks covering mor=
e=20
than 30 authors, including de La Fontaine and Lorrequer, and his site--st=
ill=20
under development--boasts some beautiful images, and beautiful words. Tak=
e=20
this example...

"We talked of pipe-clay regulation caps--
        Long twenty-fours--short culverins and mortars--
      Condemn'd the 'Horse Guards' for a set of raps,
        And cursed our fate at being in such quarters.
      Some smoked, some sighed, and some were heard to snore;
        Some wished themselves five fathoms 'neat the Solway;
      And some did pray--who never prayed before--
        That they might get the 'route' for Cork or Galway."

(From "The Confessions of Harry Lorrequer)

(if you are using images, you could grab one from here:=20
http://www.gutenberg.net.au/widger/lorrequer/lorrequer.html)

So don't wait, take a visit to Doctor Widger's Library at=20
http://www.gutenberg.net.au/widger/. Browse the virtual shelves, sample t=
he=20
literary gems and download from Project Gutenberg some of the treasure Da=
vid=20
has unearthed for us. And, as an extra treat, David has prepared several=20
volumes of his favourite quotations, from the books he has transcribed. A=
h,=20
reading! one of the most "delectable modes of getting over the ground thr=
ough=20
life", as Lorrequer declaims.

DISTRIBUTED PROOFREADERS NEEDS CONTENT

Thanks to very good recent publicity, the Distributed Proofreading
project has greatly accelerated its pace. Please visit the site:

http://texts01.archive.org/dp for more information about how you can

help, by scanning just a few pages per day.

If you have a book that has been scanned but have not yet run through
OCR (optical character recognition) please email pg@aldarondo.net
with information -- they'd be happy work on it.

Also, DP is seeking public domain books not already in the
Project Gutenberg collection. To see what is already online, visit
http://ibiblio.org/gutenberg/GUTINDEX.ALL (a text file), since the
online database doesn't reflect recent additions. Please email
charlz@lvcablemodem.com if you have books to send, or simply send them
(note that DP generally chops books to scan them, and usually does not
return scanned books).

More. . . .

Do you have Public Domain books your would like to see in the archive?
Can they be destructively scanned? If so send them to the Distributed
Proofreading Team!

AOL'S ANSWER TO TIVO TO BE LIKE TIVO, SORT OF
Recognizing the threat TiVo and similar personal video recording technolo=

Mystro uses the cable system itself to let viewers watch programs on thei=

LEGISLATION TO ESTABLISH DIGITAL COPYING RIGHTS
Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D, CA) is reintroducing legislation called the Balance
Act, intended to give people the right to make back-up copies of copyrigh=
ted
digital works for use on other devices (such as car CD players) and to
protect consumers who break technological locks in order to view DVD movi=

-
don't expect to get content as a freebie. But when people pay good money =
to
buy something and then can't use it in the way they've become accustomed =
to,
it makes them mad." The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and =
the

which is thought to have just a long-shot chance of being passed. Arguing
that such legislation "would provide safe harbor for pirates," Jack Valen=

hacking." (San Jose Mercury News 11 Mar 2003)

CORNELL TO CHARGE BANDWIDTH HOGS
A new billing system at Cornell University will charge network users
whose usage exceeds two gigabytes of data per month. Cornell's
expenses for providing Internet service are rising an average of 40
percent per year, and officials at the institution decided they had to
implement a new billing model. Formerly Cornell charged per port,
though this became problematic when some users installed multiport
repeaters, allowing them to run several computers on a single port. The
new, so-called "pay by the drink" program retains the per-port charge
but adds an Internet use fee, which covers usage up to two gigabytes
per month. Every megabyte of usage above that limit will incur a fee to
the user. Officials said the new approach to billing is designed in
part to recoup some of the costs of providing bandwidth but also to
educate users about how much bandwidth they are using. With that
information, said administrators, users can make informed
decisions--and pay for them--regarding their use of the network.
Officials at the school said that the two-gigabyte limit will allow 90
percent of users to avoid paying an extra fee.

COMPUTER WASTE BILL REINTRODUCED
Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) last week reintroduced the National
Computer Recycling Act, which died in last year's Congress. The bill
would add a $10 surcharge to the price of every computer and monitor
sold in the United States, to be used to fund what Thompson called a
national infrastructure for recycling computers and dealing with
computer waste. Specifically, the Environmental Protection Agency would
administer a grant program to fund state and local computer recycling
programs. The bill is also intended to encourage electronics
manufacturers to set up programs for consumers to return unwanted
computers and monitors for recycling. Some computer makers, including
Hewlett-Packard, Dell, and IBM, already offer return and recycling
programs, but consumer participation has thus far been modest.
